A Silver Lining to DC Metro

Thanks to a friend for showing me the silver lining to the future of the Washington, DC metro and pointing out Greater Greater Washington’s WMATA fantasty map:

Personally, as a DC resident, I’m not sure how I feel about the grand Metro extensions out into the ‘burbs, but I guess as long as I can get to work everyday - more love for Washington, DC and less cars on the road is a plus. I do wonder, however, whether the popped-collar mafia in Georgetown will object to a Metro stop (gasp) within their cobble-stone paradise?

Only time (and a lot of tax payer money) can tell.

I could understand the qualms with extending the Metro so far out, but as someone who works in Tyson’s Corner, I would welcome the Silver line. I’d love to use the Metro for my commute, especially in the state of today’s economy.

It would create an even greater explosion in housing in those areas though, and likely congest Tyson’s with even more people. But with fewer cars, maybe it’d actually be bearable.

One can never stand in the way of expansion. All we do is debate, argue, bicker, and complain about it. But in the end we end up paying more for the project than we initially planned.

A part of me says it will alleviate congestion on the roads as you stated. The other part says it will make the DC Metro area more congested. Either way, it is something that is inevitable.

Just think though. By the time it’s completed, maybe our grandchildren will have a chance to enjoy it!

I have no faith in the Metro system already, so I don’t know how they are going to pull this off without raising our metro fare to $8.00 a trip.

I like how the map’s style and colors are ripped right from the London Underground’s. That’s not a bad system to emulate, really, for the most part. American cities need better transportation badly, especially with gas up to $3.60 even in the Midwest.

Metro should’ve expanded westward years ago. Linking up the three major airports via rail simply makes sense. But, since when does logic have anything to do with processes like this…

Metro expansion would make DC a real city - one that is conscious of its urban population - but then also respect the suburbs and their proper entities. Still, we got bigger problems on our hands, aka the education system in DC. Should I care whether people can get in here from VA and MD when we don’t have school books for inner-DC kids??? I think not.
